One of my goals has been to improve writing potential in my class by presenting children with a play environment and providing genuine authentic experiences that students would be engaged in and able to talk about and in turn write about. I found that in the past strong writers coped well with whole class and group writing sessions, however, less able writers battled in both situations. This year I have withdrawn individual students from their play environment to come and write with me. Although the writing in their books is less frequent, there are many opportunities for students to write within the class. paper, pens, and other writing equipment is always freely available and easily accessible to all students. Also, the individual attention given to each student allows each to develop at their own pace without feeling the awareness of their level of competence in comparison to their peers.
