Student agency webinar by : Karen Boyes
Today we had webinar presentation by Karen Boyes on how to increase student's agency. It was a great presentation as I took aboard lot of strategies that I’m going to implement inside my classroom to further develop student agency. The following are few things that I enjoyed most during the webinar.
Ubiquity - learning is any time, anywhere, any person, any pace and learning happens all the time. Any person and pace
Future of our children is always changing. Thomas Frey 2 billion jobs eliminated by 2030.
Citizens of future have to create their own jobs
40% of 5 year old will be self employed when they leave school.
For us teachers we need to:
Facilitate , motivate, give feedback, support children
Teach them to be multi skilled, inquistic learners who can juggle things
Teachers need to learn to set back and let children take responsibility of their learning.
Student agency:
The power to act
Know their abilities-strengths and learning gaps
Many children look at their can dos and not can’t do.
Independent
Self directed
Take increasing responsibility for learning
Are you children in class:
Learning to learn
Making mistakes is a key part of learning
Being clear of their learning
Love the saying: to get easy you have to go through the hard.
FAIL
F- first
A-Attempt
I-In
L-learning
Students in classroom are scared to make mistakes. Struggles makes children strong.
Types of mistakes:
Aha moment mistakes
Stretch mistakes- I'm going to push myself to attain goal and ok to make mistake.
Sloop mistakes
High stakes mistakes- students ok to make a go learning opp is high
The learning pit teachers need to keep students out of the pit
Habits of mind
Thinking disposition art -
We want students to be -Self managing and self monitoring and self modifying-
Self managing
Control impulses for action
Clarify outcomes
Delay premature conclusions
Gather relevant data
Draw on past knowledge
Imagine and create & innovative
THE KEY IS TO EXPLICITLY TEACH SKILLS.
Teach children to wait use the phrase eg in a moment but not quite yet……..
If you were following these instructions correctly wait to answer however you take time think to answer.at would you be doing?
What I am interested in is not that you are the first
Think pair share
How can you teach your students self monitoring?
Children need to think about their own behaviours biases and beliefs
Have sufficient knowledge to know what works for them
Conscious metacognitive strategies to monitor their effectiveness
Can generate alternative plans of action
Self modifying
Reflect on own experiences
Open to more learning
Admits they are more to learning
Continuously stretching children in their language use rich language. Don't let them use the same word in their writing increase their vocabs
Put the words they use the most on www. Visualthesaurus.com
Scanmarking -example there 6 errors in the page please find it
Check ups - check list all your work
Other ideas to develop students agency:
TCI- teacher group, collaborative learner, independent learner
Thinking buddies- talk aloud to your buddy or think to your buddy
Get rid of your buddy and you think alone
poster in the wall that says here is what you are suppose to do- look at facebook
Look at checklist to see what you are suppose to do.
I really like the way you listen to another person,
I really like that you don’t give up
I really like you trying really hard
Have clear rubrics and criteria children know
visual posters on are you struck in classroom
Ubiquity- Learning can be any time and place anywhere.
The future is continually changing
Thomas Frey-2 billion jobs will be replaced by 2030
Citizens of future will need to be self-employed.
Multi Skills needed, juggle
teacher role has changed: motivate, facilitate
Student agency- they have power over their own learning
Know strengths and gaps.
Independent
Self-directed
Increasing responsibilty for learning
Teacher needs to step back and let children work out the problem
We want children to be thinkers and not just resort to rehearsed solution
Making mistakes is part of learning
Have failure conferences- what went wrong- so what now
The struggle makes you strong
Self-managing:
control impulsesclarity about outcomes
Delay premature conclusions
Gather relevant data
Imagine, create,innovate
The key is to EXPLICITLY TEACH thinking DISPOSITIONS
Wait time- 7-10 seconds: "in a moment but not quite yet."
"if you were following instructions correctly-what would you do"
Thnk-pair-share
Self-monitoring
think about own behaviours, biases and beliefs.
Ruldolf Steiner-9 yr old crises
conscious metacognitive strategies to monitor their effectiveness.
Have class mascots that they can talk. Teddy talks back with answer.
Scaffold independence in activities;
Teacher
